Bryan University Graduate Spotlight: Alexis Maitland’s Journey to Cardiovascular Medical Assistant

At Bryan University, we love to highlight the success of our graduates, and this month we’re introducing you to Alexis Maitland! She enrolled in our Clinical Medical Assisting Undergraduate Certificate to make a career change and spend more time with her 2-year-old son — and that’s exactly what she did. After graduating, she switched from serving to working full-time as a medical assistant at a cardiology clinic.

“It’s strictly Monday through Friday. Weekends are off, so I have that time to actually spend time with my child,” she said. “It has been absolutely amazing working there.”

Alexis found Bryan University through her twin sister, who graduated from the same program and even works for the same company.

“I’m doing everything from vital signs, ligno injections, some EKGs, NSTs, which are nuclear stress tests, TSTs, which is a treadmill stress test,” she said. “It’s really a great experience.”

Since graduating, Alexis said she’s recommended BU to several friends. Her advice to anyone who’s worried about learning online is, “Don’t be intimidated by an online course, because you have resources and tutors there to help you and guide you when needed. I was nervous at first, but when I learned about the extra resources and tutoring it eased my mind a lot.”

She credits BU resources, like success coaches, tutoring, and instructors who pushed her to succeed, with helping her complete the program.

“The teachers were very, very helpful,” Alexis said, highlighting how their willingness to offer extensions and guidance helped her find the learning rhythm that worked best for her. She said taking advantage of BU’s free tutoring helped her the most; “they helped me tremendously.”

She found the program to be in depth, thorough, and the modules easy to navigate.

“Very in depth, especially when it comes to some of the modules. At first, it was a little hard getting used to it, because I’ve never done online classes,” she said. “But the modules were pretty self-explanatory and laid out in a way that I could understand them, and that’s coming from somebody who has really bad ADD and ADHD.”

The feeling of passing her last exam stands out as a moment of pride for her. “That made me feel absolutely amazing about myself, because in the end it made me feel like the course, materials, and all the resources that I had access to paid off.”

Outside of work, she’s also a firefighter and working to earn her paramedic license. She hopes to work one day as a flight nurse.

For anyone taking the same program, or thinking about it, her advice is: “Definitely push yourself, push your knowledge, push your ability to understand the course materials, because in the end it’s all going to work out.”
