This month’s Bryan U employee spotlight is Robert Kohlbus. Robert is a faculty member in the Web Development department at Bryan University. Robert started at BU in March of 2021 and has been a professional web developer and programmer for over 25 years. As a student, he enjoyed helping his fellow students understand the material in their classes. When he received his master’s degree in applied computer science, he decided to explore teaching as a profession. Robert saw a job posting for an adjunct instructor in the web development program and said, “I saw it as the perfect job for me to share my experience and knowledge.” He is very grateful to BU and Scott Ashcroft for giving him his first teaching opportunity.
Robert enjoys his position at BU and has especially enjoyed the challenge of revising and developing new courses. “BU has allowed me to teach and the amazing opportunity to revise and develop new courses.” In addition to course development, Robert loves interacting with his students and watching them grow as web developers. It is rewarding to Robert to witness his students become more confident with the skills they develop. He says, “Experiencing that “ah-ha” moment when everything clicks is magical.”
Robert noted the best piece of advice he’s heard is a quote from John Wesely, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, so long as ever you can.” Robert is living up to that quote in his role at BU. Robert provides mentorship and advice to his former students. He encourages his students to keep in touch with him even after they have finished their classes. And he enjoys checking out the great websites they create in their careers.
Robert says, “Working at BU has inspired and challenged me to continue learning and expanding my knowledge.” He is currently studying for cybersecurity certifications that
he looks forward to utilizing it in his future courses.
