Vanessa Bradbrook’s interest in the law began when she was a child. Even at a young age, she was passionate about it and enjoyed reading cases and doing her own research. Once Vanessa reached high school, she began working in restaurants and stayed on that path for a while. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when bars and restaurants were closed, she knew she needed to find a different direction, something that would make her children proud and something that could move her family forward. She thought back to her passion for the law and began looking into classes and programs for legal studies; her research led her to Bryan University’s Paralegal Studies and Litigation Technologies program.
“Bryan was able to offer me a program with so much flexibility in the study area I was interested in.” while deciding on BU, Vanessa, a working mom with two children, knew she would need a flexible program to which she could realistically commit while still keeping up with her work and family obligations. Bryan’s fully online accelerated program was just what she was looking for.
Vanessa loved how the staff at BU made the process so simple. They laid out what exactly they needed from her and all the deadlines. They even provided her with the exact program breakdown so she knew the courses and the deadlines before she began. She also appreciated the back-and-forth communication that she received from the BU staff.
As an avid fan of the law, Vanessa enjoyed her classes and liked that it was work she could handle. And though she didn’t find her classes extremely challenging, she liked that her instructors challenged her to think about cases differently. Vanessa liked when they reviewed legal issues that were actual legal cases. She felt the real-life approach to studying the law has prepared her for a career in the legal field. The fact that the program is at your own pace was a plus for Vanessa; working two jobs plus raising two kids, she needed a program to be flexible with her time. She also noted that while the program was at your own pace, it really was up to you to succeed, “It’s up to you if you have questions or you don’t understand – if you don’t reach out for help, then you aren’t setting yourself up to succeed.”
After graduating from the Associate’s Degree program, Vanessa felt that she wanted to learn more, and she enrolled in Bryan’s Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies and Litigation Technologies program. Completing her associate’s degree allowed her to leave one of her two jobs and have more time with her children while she completes her bachelor’s degree.
“Bryan University gave my children something to look up to and to know that we don’t quit.”
Vanessa advises someone interested in starting a program at Bryan: “Stay focused; the end goal is closer than you think, and never lose sight of what you are doing it for.”
