Bryan University Student Spotlight: Building a Future in Pharmacy with Nicole Curran

When Nicole Curran first started working at a retail shop in Manchester, New Hampshire, she never imagined she would one day be preparing for a career in the healthcare field. The shop sold scrubs, which she loved because they were cute and comfortable, but the idea of actually working in medicine felt completely out of reach.

It wasn’t until she began meeting customers who were students in programs like Medical Assisting and Pharmacy Technician that she realized there were accessible, supportive pathways into healthcare—paths designed for people just like her, even those who never pictured themselves in a clinical setting.

“I always thought there was no way I could be in the medical field. I’m way too squeamish,” she remembered.

Life eventually had a way of shifting her perspective.

A Turning Point that Opened a New Direction

Everything changed on New Year’s Day in 2023 when Nicole lost her father to lung cancer. It was a moment that changed her outlook on everything.

“Heartbroken and wishing I could have done something more, I started discussing options with my husband,” she said. “He’s my biggest supporter, my rock, and my best friend.”

Nicole considered nursing for a while, especially oncology or pediatrics, but she knew herself well enough to recognize that the emotional toll would be too heavy.

“I attach and form relationships so easily. I couldn’t handle the heartbreak,” she shared.

Her husband suggested looking into pharmacy after seeing a friend succeed as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. That idea made Nicole pause and eventually sparked something in her.

Finding Bryan University

Once Nicole began researching training programs, requirements, and future opportunities, she discovered Bryan University

After requesting information, she heard from Brooke, an admissions representative who made an immediate impact.

“She was so sweet and answered every single crazy question I had,” Nicole said. “She made sure I felt secure in my choice. It couldn’t have been a better fit for me.”

With an unpredictable lifestyle and long workdays, Nicole needed a program that worked around her real life. Bryan University’s online model offered exactly that. She enrolled in July 2025 and quickly found the same level of support from her instructors.

“My teachers have been incredible since I started,” she said. “Multiple emails back and forth, even the outlandish questions about relocating. They’ve been so patient with me.”

Stepping Into the Field with Walgreens

Once Nicole felt ready, she started applying to pharmacies. Walgreens reached out immediately after the weekend.

In her state, technicians do not need a license, and Walgreens offers its own training program to prepare employees for national certification. It was the perfect entry point into the field.

“I’m not on the floor yet, but Bryan University made the Walgreens training so much easier to understand,” she shared. “Pharmacy math, medication names, laws, regulations. It all clicked faster because of what I learned here.”

Balancing a Full Life with Big Goals

Nicole and her husband often work fourteen-hour days. She completes homework in the car while he drives, usually powered by her phone’s hotspot.

“Despite exhaustion and not wanting to pursue homework after going to bed at 4 or 5 a.m., I always remind myself there’s an end goal,” she said. “It’s to create a better future for my little family.”

Her first Bryan University class, which focused on developing a growth mindset and building effective study habits, made a lasting difference.

“I’m so grateful for the beginner classes. It has been so long since I’ve done any type of schooling,” she said. “I love the live classes too. It feels like a little community.”

Looking Towards a Growing Future

Nicole is excited for the opportunities ahead. Pharmacy technicians have multiple pathways, and she sees long-term potential in the field.

“There is so much growth and opportunity,” she said. “The grit is the grind. Never give up on your dreams, no matter how big or small.”

She also credits the support she has received along the way.

“I want to thank Bryan University for their accommodation, patience, and support. There is always someone to reach out to when you have questions about your career.”
