Behind the Content: Meet Bryan University’s Senior Content Marketing Developer & Copywriter

At Bryan University, celebrating the behind-the-scenes work and the people doing it is more than a monthly spotlight, it’s part of our culture. We win together at BU, and this month, I’m stepping into the employee spotlight as our Senior Content Marketing Developer & Copywriter!  Hi, I’m Emily!

So, how did I end up here? Like some of our students, it was time for my career to shift. I needed a role that was flexible and supportive, but that still makes a real impact on others, and BU was the perfect fit. I just celebrated my two-year anniversary in January!

As part of the Marketing team, my work consists of everything from program launches, student interviews, and employee interviews to data analytics, planning, and creating social media content for BU and its subsidiaries.

My favorite part about working in higher education is the students, like a lot of higher ed professionals will tell you. As someone who pursued higher education in the way that worked for my life, not the way I dreamed of doing it, I especially relate to our students here at BU. From adult learners, career changers, and parents — our students are people who need to make school fit into their life, not the other way around.

My path to mass communications started in high school. I loved cameras and documenting everything around me, but I wasn’t too bothered with what I wanted to “be” after high school. When I needed something for a required senior internship, my chemistry teacher helped me organize one with his wife, who worked at a local government television station. That opened a door for me, and I discovered a love for production, journalism, and storytelling.

For me, the switch to higher education was a natural one. I always romanticized the “college experience” and knew in high school I wanted to go to a university. I’m a first-generation college graduate and even though I craved the experience of living on campus, it wasn’t in the cards for me. I started at community college and transferred to a university after earning my associate’s degree. Over the next two years, I commuted full-time to school while working part-time.

During my last semester of college, I had an internship with a local news station and after graduation they hired me full-time, and that’s where I spent the next six years as a digital content producer. Then I made the jump to higher ed.

At BU, the mission is real — helping students change their lives is at the center of everything we do, and most people here are genuinely motivated by that. I’m a strong believer in meeting students where they’re at, and I’m proud of building a social voice that supports and celebrates student and staff success. It’s all about community and encouragement; I want people to see themselves in our students and feel inspired by their wins.

Outside of work, my most important title is “mom.” I have three kids; 5-year-old twins and a 3-year-old, so I’m never bored (or alone). It was actually at my girls’ third birthday party that my now-manager (and longtime family friend), Tina Cruz, BU’s Assistant Director of Content Marketing and Communications, mentioned she’d soon be looking to hire someone. The rest, as they say, is history.

Some fun facts about me:

  • I’m a native Floridian who just relocated to the chilly northeast.
  • My husband William and I just celebrated our 10-year anniversary in October!
  • In my limited free time (parents, you know) I enjoy listening to and reading books — anything with fantasy, magic, swords, etc. is my jam.
  • You could definitely describe me as an elder emo; I will always hold onto the music that got me through my teens, along with Gilmore Girls and The Princess Diaries which I will always rewatch.
  • I’m also an avid em-dash user and nothing will ever change that (looking at you AI).
  • Mental health = health; you’re not alone. Find help here.

One of my favorite quotes to share is from Bill Nye who said, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” Ask questions, choose kindness whenever you can, and never assume you know more than someone else because you’re never too old or experienced to learn and grow.

Another quote that sticks out to me is one I heard doing an interview for another BU employee spotlight. Mark Farley, a Career Services Advisor here at BU, told me the best advice he ever got was don’t turn a bad moment into a bad day.

He told me, “I used to be so full of fear of something negative happening. I would blow it up in my mind so that it blocked my whole view for the day, and I couldn’t see around it. I take that bad moment and make it into a bad day. I’ve learned that yes, life is full of twists, turns, trials, tests, and temptations, and we will have trouble, but don’t let it become so powerful that it takes you hostage. Don’t turn a bad moment into a bad day. You’ll get through it.”

I’m excited to continue growing at BU, celebrating wins, motivating students, and showing anyone interested in continuing their education or changing their path that it’s never too late. I would encourage anyone interested in attending or working at BU to go for it. People here actually care — about students and each other.
