Apply For Federal Aid Using FAFSA

Financial aid is available if you qualify through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There are several types of federal aid options available, such as federal grants and loans.

Students must submit their FAFSA application each year to qualify for federal financial aid. Bryan University’s FAFSA’s school code is 007164.

Federal Grants

Through FAFSA, the government provides various grants to students attending college or career schools. Unlike loans, most grants are sources of financial aid that do not need to be repaid.

Types of grants include the following:

  • Federal Pell Grants

Awarded to students with exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree.

The maximum Federal Pell Grant award is $7,395 for the 2023-2024 award year.

  • Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant

Awarded to students whose parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. armed forces and died as a result of military service, were under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of your parent’s or guardian’s death, meet the remaining Federal Pell Grant eligibility requirements, and are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant on the basis of your Expected Family Contribution.

The award is equal to the amount of a maximum Federal Pell Grant for the award year but cannot exceed your cost of attendance for the award year.

  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Awarded to students with exceptional financial need.

The FSEOG award ranges from $100-$4,000 a year depending on financial need.

Federal Loans

Through FAFSA, you may be eligible for loans as part of your financial aid package. This is borrowed money that you must pay back with interest.

Typically, federal student loans have more benefits than loans from banks or other private sources. There are several types of Direct Loans available through FAFSA. Types of loans including the following:

  •  Direct Subsidized Loans

Undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need to help cover the cost of college or career school are eligible for direct subsidized loans.

Direct Subsidized Loans range from $5,500-$12,500 per year.

  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Undergraduate, graduate, or professional students are eligible for direct unsubsidized loans. Eligibility is not based on financial need.

Direct Unsubsidized Loans range from $5,500-$12,500 per year.

  • Direct PLUS Loans

Graduate or professional students, and parents of dependent undergraduate students are eligible for PLUS loans to help pay for expenses that are not covered by other financial aid. Eligibility is not based on financial need, but a credit check is required.

Direct PLUS Loans range depending on the remaining college costs, determined by the institution, that are not covered by other financial aid items.

NSLDS Reporting Disclosure

Students and/or parents who enter into an agreement regarding a Title IV loan are advised that the loan information will be submitted to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and will be accessible by guarantee agencies, lenders, and schools determined to be authorized users of the data system.

The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for student aid. NSLDS receives data from schools, guarantee agencies, the Direct Loan program, and other Department of ED programs.

NSLDS Student Access provides a centralized, integrated view of Title IV loans and grants so that recipients of Title IV Aid can access and inquire about their Title IV loans and/or grant data.

Students and/or parents can access their personal loan/grant information at https://nslds.ed.gov/nslds/nslds_SA/

Professional Judgement

Bryan University based on the U.S. Department of Education guidelines will use professional judgment in determining eligibility for federal student aid. The review process allows for consideration of projected year income, rather than prior year income to calculate a student's eligibility. The focus of the professional judgment is to determine how the special circumstance affects the students/family’s ability to pay their tuition.

The financial aid office requires that students provide certain documents to support their claims of special circumstances. The first step in the evaluation will be to evaluate the Free Form for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) along with the documents submitted to determine if the student is eligible for any federal student aid adjustments.

Each professional judgment review is done on a case-by-case basis and must be documented in the student file with the following, and is at the discretion of the school and is a matter of policy:

  • Federal tax transcripts for the year(s) being evaluated
  • W2's and/or 1099 forms
  • Professional Judgment application
  • Detailed letter of explanation
  • Student/Spouse/Parent total loss of employment for more than 10 consecutive weeks
  • Student/Spouse/Parent total loss of untaxed income or benefits
  • Court documents of separation or divorce
  • Spouses’ death certificate or obituary notice

The decision of the financial aid office is final and there is no appeal process. Professional Judgments will be evaluated on an Award Year basis.
