A micro course is a short, competency-based course that verifies a person’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in a specific area. They result in a digital badge or digital certificate that lets employers know a person has proficiency in that area of study.
The goal of a micro is to allow someone to fill in gaps in their education or to continue their education by gaining new skills on demand without having to commit to a long-term program. They’re ideal for people who value efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and relevance in their continued education.
The length of a micro course can vary but they’re generally shorter than a traditional degree or certificate program. For example, a micro through the National Education Association typically takes 10-15 hours to complete. At Bryan University, our micros are 8-12 hours in length.
Most micros are offered online and are self-paced, which gives learners the flexibility to fit them into their schedules.
Micros are a type of modular learning, which is a flexible approach to learning that breaks down the curriculum into smaller units that can be adapted to suit the needs of different students.
They offer the following benefits:
The process of enrolling in a micro course is essentially the same as a traditional certificate or degree program just on a smaller scale and without the long-term commitment.
At Bryan University, we currently offer micros for Certified Nursing Assistants through our Professional Advancement and Continuing Education (PACE) program. They include Behavioral Health Level 1, Infection Control, and Respiratory Care CNA.
Our CNA micros are developed with subject matter experts, are 8-12 hours long and are verifiable through Credly. Students who complete our Nursing Assistant Certificate program receive a free voucher for a micro of their choice.
