StreetLightUSA Spotlights Volunteer Julie Phillips, Bryan U VP of Employee Excellence

Streetlight Logo Color 2014Bryan University’s Vice President of Employee Excellence, Julie Phillips, recently received the monthly volunteer spotlight from StreetLightUSA.

Julie has been volunteering since February 2015 with StreetLightUSA, a nonprofit organization located in Peoria, AZ, that is the largest facility in the country specializing in the care and healing of victims of child sex trafficking and sexual trauma. StreetLightUSA’s vision is to be the nationally recognized leader in restoring the lives of adolescent girls who are victims of sexual trauma through research, strategic partnerships, and innovative models of care.

“I heard about StreetLight USA after doing some research on the internet,” Julie says, “and I was shocked to discover how rampant human trafficking is in our own state. For several years, I have felt a need to help young girls who have fallen victim to sex trafficking. I was heartbroken and inspired after reading some of the stories of StreetLight residents, and decided I wanted to figure out how to use my talents to help this wonderful organization.”

Julie says she volunteers because she wants to give back to her community and help those who otherwise may not be able to help themselves. “Having two young girls of my own, it really hit home for me and reinforced the responsibility I have as a mother to care, love and protect my young girls. I am hopeful that as I continue to volunteer at StreetLight and learn more about sex trafficking, I can continue to make more of an impact in helping victims by building community awareness and becoming a ‘louder voice’ in eliminating the sexual exploitation of young girls. I am extremely grateful for all the blessings I have received in my life. I realize that not everyone has been as fortunate, so I feel it is my duty to volunteer some of my time lending a hand to those in need.”
