Overcoming Basic Disruption

Week one of the Online Learner’s Bootcamp Series focuses on overcoming the disruptions online education brings to the simplest elements of your life. If you understand your basic needs in their simplest sense, then you are better prepared to adapt to adversity and, accordingly, absorb problems and continue your education.

Considering some of Maslow’s basic needs depicted in the above image, evaluate your environment without school. Do you have a steady schedule for eating and sleeping? If not, it’s time to get disciplined; disrupting either of these with education is not a recipe for success. To be and a successful online learner, it’s best to find a steady schedule and stick to it. Regulate your eating and sleeping habits to the best of your ability first, and then add education into your need foundation. Like puzzle pieces, everything will fit into your basic needs foundation—even education. However, you must be sure your other basic needs are regulated first.

What about your shelter? How does online learning affect your living conditions? How will your living conditions affect your ability to be a self-regulated learner? You must figure out this tricky, reflexive relationship. There is no one-size-fits-all formula; each home, each learner, and each family has a distinct confluence of ingredients that must come together carefully. You might have to try multiple iterations of workspace setups and rooms to figure out which works best for you. Ultimately, your living area should not interfere with your learning environment, and education should not disrupt your home.

Over the next eight weeks, we will discuss each level of needs and how education can be a congruent part of your life and your growth process. You will learn to identify and limit the disruption while focusing on your desired cognitive growth and your innate drive toward self-actualization.
